My Thoughts

Katie Campbell might be one of my favorite main characters I’ve read recently. She’s funny, clumsy, and completely comfortable with who she is. She’s not sitting around waiting for a man to come along and change her life. As a travel writer, her job keeps her constantly on the move, and she genuinely loves that lifestyle. So when her editor offers her a more permanent editing position, she hesitates. Taking the job could mean giving up the travel she loves so much.

Her latest assignment takes her to Scotland for an “Edwardian Experience” held at a manor owned by the male main character, Graeme, who is working to repair and restore the estate. To fund those repairs, he’s hosting this immersive event. Katie and Graeme’s first meeting is one for the books—I genuinely laughed out loud more than once. Katie is definitely not what you would call graceful. Her blog is named Miss Adventure for a reason (a perfect play on “misadventure”), and we get plenty of her clumsy, chaotic moments throughout the story.

The character development in this book is especially strong. Katie starts out not wanting to settle down and not wanting the editing job, but as the story unfolds, she begins to realize that her lifestyle, while exciting, can also be lonely. She comes to understand that finding love doesn’t mean she has to give up traveling. At the same time, she discovers that she actually enjoys helping other writers grow and hone their craft, just like her editor has done for her.

Graeme’s story brings in most of the twists, and without giving anything away, his growth is just as compelling. He struggles with falling for Katie because of her transient lifestyle, especially given his own past and his desire to stay rooted in one place. Over time, he learns that being grounded doesn’t mean he can’t still step outside his comfort zone and experience more of the world.

And the setting… absolutely breathtaking. Pepper Basham does an incredible job immersing the reader in the Scottish Highlands. The descriptions are so vivid that I found myself wanting to book a flight just to see it all in person. She has truly mastered the art of bringing a setting to life.

Overall, this story balances humor, heart, and a touch of wanderlust in a way that makes it both entertaining and meaningful. Between the laugh-out-loud moments, the emotional growth, and the immersive setting, it’s the kind of book that leaves you smiling long after you’ve turned the last page.
